Conjugal Duty: Domestic Culture on the Southern Frontier, 1830-1910 is an attempt to see into the lives of common white farming women and their families in nineteenth-century Mississippi. It adds to recent scholarship on yeomen and households a view of the later-settled areas of the South which were dominated not by planters and slaves but by small farmers striving for self-sufficiency.

Because of the scarcity of documentary sources pertaining to the frontier yeomanry, and because material culture reveals the values and aesthetics of cultures rather than individuals, this study is grounded in vernacular architecture. House plans, along with household inventories, census records, court cases, laws, and a variety of other sources help to trace the evolution of the domestic environment--and hence, domestic culture--of yeoman farmers and their descendants in Mississippi over the course of the nineteenth century.

This study is arranged like a walk through a typical yeoman household, pausing in each room long enough to observe the family and the changes occurring within each. After a brief survey of the cultural and physical landscape in which yeoman households stood, it enters the hearthroom, observing frontier foodways, ideas about cooking, and uses of domestic space. Later, in the kitchen, it observes the concurrent evolution of ideas about female domesticity in the homes of yeomen and their planter neighbors. In the bedroom, this study examines the importance of the cycles of production and reproduction to the farm household economy, looks at frontier ideas about sexuality and traces changes in attitudes toward marriage and divorce. Finally, out on the porch, it considers the importance of community in frontier culture and watches growing concern for familial privacy. The emergence of two new vernacular house types in the region around the turn of the century, at the same time that sweeping economic and social changes altered the nature of rural farming life, shows the way that the built environment both responds to and reflects the values and concerns of the broader culture of which it is a part.
