Over the past decade, there has been a growing concern amongst health advocates, politicians, and scholars regarding the fact that pregnancy and childbirth education initiatives often do not effectively reach marginalized women (namely, low-income and minority women) in Canada. This project combines two classical anthropological methodologies, participant observation and semi-structured interviews, to develop an understanding of poor Black women's perceptions of, and experiences with, prenatal education programs in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). Eleven lower-income Black expectant mothers and five community resource centres' (CRC) prenatal education facilitators were interviewed, and CRC prenatal education classes were observed. The research suggests that salient factors affecting low-income Black women's engagement with prenatal education resources include (a) structural barriers, (b) financial instability, (c) perceptions of race and class-mediated prejudices, and' (d) prior negative experiences with discriminatory healthcare environments. The research also highlights the usefulness of community-tailored prenatal education programs that are offered by CRCs.
