Thesis (M.A.)--University of South Carolina, 2008.
In this thesis I utilize dental caries indices to assess changes over time in the relative maize content of the diets of elite inidividuals in the Lake Patzcuaro Basin, Michoacan, Mexico. This lake basin became the homeland of the Tarascan state, contemporaries and enemies of the Aztecs of Central Mexico. Despite changes in the availability of agricultural land due to fluctuations in lake levels, and large increases in the population density of the basin, previous research utilizing stable isotope analysis indicates that the ratio of maize in elite diets did not change. This research supports those findings using a complimentary method. These findings have significant implications for the development of a state level society in this area.
