The Aboriginal people living in the Kimberley region of Western Australia have been affected by a number of variables, beginning with the colonization of Australia by the British in 1788. Over time the people have experienced three major environmental shifts, resulting in large changes in culture, economics, and nutrition. These shifts have resulted in both malnutrition and the emergence of a number of chronic and infectious diseases due to living conditions, loss of identity and culture, lack of opportunity and education, and little access to medical care and nutritious foods.
