Mary Kay Cosmetics, Inc, is a direct sales organization that appeals to over half a million women in the United States. Despite popular conceptions of obsessed saleswomen selling cosmetics and driving pink Cadillacs, participation in Mary Kay offers some women a potential path to material contentment and sometimes hard, cold cash. This ethnography examines one sales unit, exploring issues such as cosmetics and standards of beauty, consumer culture, belonging to a group and the influence these issues have on a woman's identity. Chapters topics include: Cosmetics and direct sales industry history and background, personal narrative in Mary Kay, Mary Kay corporate philosophy and lived Mary Kay. Drawing on the work of Angela McRobbie, Susan Bordo, Raymond Williams, I argue that despite Mary Kay Cosmetics embrace of seemingly traditional values such as the sanctity of the nuclear family, defined gender roles which place the husband at the head of the family and belief in a Christian God, participation in Mary Kay offers some women an alternative space or 'structure of feeling.'
