Employing an energy flows approach to the understanding of social and cultural phenomena the research in this dissertation suggests that a household's demographic density is a more important factor than market participation in the triggering of agricultural intensification. The research also supports the idea that traditional ethnoecological knowledge is gradually lost as householders depend less on their natural resources and more on economic ones.
