Three Late Intermediate skeletal samples from the Osmore valley in southern Peru were analyzed for a variety of skeletal markers. The results were used to evaluate the applicability of the Murra model of verticality or zonal complementary, versus, the Rostworowski horizontal economic model, for the Chiribaya population.

520 $a Demographic profiles, stature, dental health, diet and frequencies of anemia, periostitis, transverse lines, trauma, tuberculosis, arthritis, osteophytosis, spondylolisis, and auditory exostoses were evaluated.
520 $a The results indicate neither the vertical or the horizontal model can completely account for the patterns observed within and among these samples. Instead, they reveal a mix of patterns that suggest the Chiribaya utilized practices particular to each economic model, in effect, creating a diversified economic strategy.
520 $a Furthermore, patterns of dental health and osteopathies indicate that specialization of economic activities occurred primarily as part of a sexual division of labor rather than at the community level of organization.
520 $a The Chiribayan demographic profiles and patterns of trauma do not indicate the presence of warfare. Stress markers and activity induced osteopathies are prevalent evidencing a relatively harsh lifestyle for this ancient population.
520 $a Finally, a tuberculosis-like pathogen corresponding in frequency with increased altitude and terrestrial meat consumption may indicate that domesticated animals served as a vector for that disease.
