Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Los Angeles, 1998.
The body of my research focuses on the economy, politics, and religious shifts in the collapsing states of Teotihuacan and Late New Kingdom Egypt. The decline of these religious regimes was accompanied by internal breakdowns of domestic order. It appears that the sacred areas in these cities were destroyed by their own populace. What forces pulled these religious regimes apart? An examination of the events surrounding the collapse of these two regimes provides insight into the ways governments alter religious practices during times of crisis, and about the incentive traps states must avoid in order to preserve economic and social stability.
