A current problem in anthropological studies concerns the economies of rain forest peoples and their prehistoric ancestors. Ethnographic studies in various regions of the world suggest that long-term habitation through foraging in tropical rain forest is not sustainable due to a lack of sufficient food resources. This view is reflected in models of Southeast Asian prehistory that suggest insular rain forest regions were colonized by agricultural populations before significant cultural developments could occur.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The author provides an alternative view in the present Dissertation suggesting that long term habitation in the rain forests of eastern Indonesia was possible due to a specialized economy based on a combination of foraging, hunting and the management of tree crops. Archaeological evidence from sites on the islands of Buru and Ambon suggests a greater degree of flexibility and organizational complexity on the part of the indigenous peoples than mentioned in previous accounts. Although data limitations in the present Dissertation illustrate the need for further research, the author suggests that a model based on adaptive shifts between foraging and collecting strategies that incorporates behavioral flexibility provides an alternative to hypotheses which highlight food scarcity and dependence as the dominant way of life among rain forest foraging groups.
