This study addresses the evolution of a regional economy centered on the small urban settlement of Chilapa, Guerrero, Mexico, from 1930 to 1990. The analysis focuses on maize, the population's principal foodstuff, and demonstrates that the manner in which maize was produced and distributed played a major determining role in the region's trajectory of economic development.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The study offers a detailed survey of the ecological characteristics of the region which most directly effected the way in which maize was produced and distributed. It examines the differential impact on urban and agrarian sectors of the region's population of technological, environmental, and demographic changes which altered the manner and costs of obtaining maize. Finally, it documents the economic and political consequences of a shift from a production system based on human and animal energy to one dependent on fossil-fuel technologies.
