This project examines the Young Men's Christian Association in early twentieth century China. The student department, which began in 1895, attracted a new generation of educated, urban students who were searching for ways to strengthen China. Student programs in the YMCA focused on educational, athletic, and social welfare projects. Classes in modern topics appealed to a generation of students ready to experiment with new approaches. Student training programs prepared students to initiate and lead their own movement; successful athletic teams added to a sense of nationalism; and social service projects introduced the idea of community-based reform campaigns.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Chapters one through four of this project deal with the YMCA as an institution. In this section I examine the YMCA's history, philosophy, management style, and career personnel in order to better understand how the YMCA operated in China.

YMCA secretaries arrived in China in 1895 with a clear mandate: set up a Chinese YMCA and turn control over to Chinese secretaries as soon as possible. Chapters five through nine examine how this mandate was implemented in China. Individual chapters focus on educational, athletic, and social service programs.

In these later chapters, the YMCA's contribution is understood to be the result of two converging forces: the YMCA's commitment to becoming a Chinese institution and the changing relationships between private groups and the state during the late-imperial and post-imperial period. By the middle of this century, the YMCA lost its autonomy as a private organization and became an appendage of the state.
