Thesis (Ph.D.)--Northern Arizona University, 2010.
The focus of this study was to examine the extent to which depression and anxiety (dependent variables) can be predicted by the key demographic variables (age, gender, and socio-economic status), spiritual well-being, religious well-being, and existential well-being (independent variables). The sample group (N=172) in this study was operationally defined as older adults, age 60 and above, who were members of a senior volunteer organization living in the Northern and central region of Arizona. Three instruments were used for this study. Spiritual well-being was measured by the Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS), which consists of 20 items that are evenly divided into two subscales: Religious Well-Being (RWB) and Existential Well-being (EWB) (Ellison, 1983). Depression was measured by the Geriatric Depression Scale [GDS] (Yesavage et al., 1983). Anxiety was measured by the Geriatric Anxiety Inventory [GAI] (Pachana et al., 2007). Age, gender, and SES were included in this study as demographic variables.

The exclusion of the full-scale score of SWBS from the final analyses was supported by the bivariate correlations between SWBS and its subscales: RWBS and EWBS, which were .92 and .78, respectively. Results of the two revised research questions showed statistically significant linear relationships between the independent variables (age, gender, SES, RWBS, and EWBS) and the dependent variables (depression and anxiety). When each independent variable was assessed, the researcher determined that only EWBS had a significant inverse relationship with depression and anxiety. The overall correlation of the age, gender, SES, RWBS, and EWBS with depression was R=.36. The adjusted R2=.10, thus approximately 10% of the total variance in depression was explained by participants' age, gender, SES, RWBS, and EWBS. There was a significant inverse relationship between existential well-being and depression (controlling for the effects of age, gender, SES, RWB), beta=-.37. Additionally, the overall correlation of the age, gender, SES, RWBS, and EWBS with anxiety was R=.41. The adjusted R2 of .14 indicated that approximately one-sixth of the variability in GAI scores was predicted by age, gender, SES, RWBS, and EWBS. In this analysis, the beta of -.41 represented approximately 41/100 standard deviation change in anxiety for every one standard deviation change in existential well-being score while all other effects were held constant.

The results of this study contribute to the knowledge of psychotherapists regarding how to help older adults cope with loss. Moreover, the results brought additional attention to the need for future studies on existentialism, anxiety, and depression in older adults. Lastly, this quantitative research adds to the modest number of studies on anxiety in older adults and provides additional understanding of older adults who are suffering from anxiety and depression.
