Thesis (M.A.)--State University of New York Empire State College, 2010.
The launching of women-owned businesses is growing at twice the rate of their male counterparts. This paper explores the motivators behind this explosive growth and the impact of this phenomenon as it relates to our economic situation today. It attempts to establish that the motivation of women to launch their own firms reaches beyond simply a desire to be their own boss or seeking independence. Furthermore, this position paper hopes to provide supporting evidence that the motivations for this growth within the entrepreneurial sector of the U.S. workforce, stem from females hitting the glass ceiling, wage inequality between men and women in the formal workplace, and societal norms established between males and females. This paper also makes an effort to identify how U.S. policies can assist in overcoming obstacles women entrepreneurs face and further impact the growth of women-owned businesses.
