Homework has been a time-honored strategy used by teachers to reinforce knowledge gained in the classroom. Consistent completion of homework allows students to improve upon learning and gain a greater possibility for academic achievement (Simplicio, 2005). This action research study attempted to evaluate how varying the style of homework assignments would improve student motivation to complete it. Various methodologies were used to triangulate data during this study. These methods consisted of a Likert Survey, a homework completion rubric, and an open-ended questionnaire. The results of the data suggested that varying the type of science homework, rather than traditional textbook outlines, was one factor that might have helped with motivation. Assigning homework that was relevant to what was learned in the classroom might also improve student motivation to complete it.
