520 $a Today's culture is increasingly aware of ethics and moral values. Corporations hire ethical consultants, congressional committees probe political integrity, the American Civil Liberties Union rails against the morality of the religious right. This same culture, however, shows a growing distrust of traditional sources of moral guidance. There is, in sum, a felt need in society for assistance in thinking through complex moral issues. In this milieu the Word is preached, proposing not a system of ideology, but a person, Jesus, who invites us to life lived to the full.
520 $a The author addressed this area of moral formation by preparing homiletic resource materials for the priests at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Bellefontaine Neighbors, Missouri. She also prepared a six-week reflection booklet for use by existing small Christian communities within the parish. Both sets of materials surfaced principles of moral theology, highlighting areas such as the role of the Bible in moral discernment, moral courage in following one's conscience, etc. A focus group of participants, and interviews with the coordinator of small groups and both priests, preceded and followed the six weeks of coordinated reflection and preaching. Evaluation forms provided in the booklets were completed by participants and collated as part of the evaluation of the project.
520 $a The project affirmed the need for ongoing honest conversation about moral issues voiced in the Sunday preaching and raised questions about the grounding of preaching and preachers in the community. This area lends itself to ongoing research.
