In 1996, the Ford Visteon Sterling Plant started to produce front axles for 4-wheel-drive trucks and sport utility vehicles. Growing market demand required greater throughput from the plant. A discrete-event simulation model of the production line was developed and used to evaluate the impact of proposed changes. A simulation model was also used as a training tool. The Front-Axle Team meets weekly to review simulation runs, conduct what-if analysis and prepare action plans to overcome productivity problems.
