Designing for emerging telecommunications networks based on the synchronous optical network (SONET) requires new expertise and software tools. Bellcore and the regional Bell operating companies developed the SONET Toolkit, a collection of decision support tools, to meet this need. Savings of 10 to 25 percent have been demonstrated using the SONET Toolkit to evaluate network designs; hundreds of millions in additional savings are expected over the next three to five years.
