In 1994, to support a global supply chain reengineering effort and achieve quick customer responsiveness with minimal inventory in the IBM global supply chain, the Asset Management Tool (AMT) was developed and implemented. AMT consists of an optimization engine, a simulator and a series of data extraction modules. It is used to study a wide range of issues including inventory budgets, turnover objectives, customer service level targets, effects of new product introduction and supply-chain scenario analyses.
