The research undertaken for this thesis attempts to theoretically contextualize Foucault's archaeological project within the influential intellectual tradition generally known as the history and philosophy of science in France, as well as to critically evaluate the epistemological commitments and methodological protocols that subtend Foucault's archaeological histories. An argument is advanced that one of the most theoretically under-developed areas of Foucault's thought, vis-a-vis the secondary literature, is a critical assessment of his archaeological project-and particularly in terms of situating archaeology within the broader context of the French epistemological tradition. Foucault's work in The Archaeology of Knowledge will serve as an important cornerstone for an examination and subsequent critique of his epistemology, and we will also draw upon the key works of the French historians of science Gaston Bachelard (1884-1962) and Georges Cangui them (1904-1995) in order to isolate and to specify the epistemological protocols of the history of science. Our analysis of these respective historical traditions will reveal that the question of the nature of rationality serves as a key point of differentiation between the epistemological histories of Bachelard and Canguilhem, and the archaeological history of Foucault, and all argument will be made that the archaeology of savoir---in its broadest interpretation---may be said to represent Foucault's attempt to elaborate a critical alternative to teleological histories. While a critical assessment of Foucault's archaeological history reveals that a theoretical point-of-impasse is reached in the archaeological imperative to avoid all interpretation, The Archaeology of Knowledge is, nevertheless, a remarkable achievement and a significant contribution to 20th century thought. Finally, an argument will be made that Foucault's later genealogical studies can be understood as a critical extension and theoretical refinement of the archaeological project, and particularly insofar as the genealogical project both builds upon Foucault's earlier work, and resolves certain of the difficulties that Foucault had been forced to confront in the archaeological histories.
