The framework for this study is the housing careers model that has been used in previous studies (e.g. Murdie, 2002) to study housing for immigrants. Participants for this study included 13 men and seven women of Somali origin and seven leaders of public and non-profit organizations. Data were collected by using in-depth interviews, which were transcribed and analyzed using research questions as a guide.

Results reveal that, consistent with previous research findings (e.g., Bolt & van Kempen, 2002; Hulchanski, 1997; Mattu, 2002; Murdie, 2002), the Somali immigrants in the Twin Cities face problems of lack of quality, adequate and affordable housing; because of barriers such as lack of education and relevant job skills, lack of information on housing opportunities, refugee status, and language. This study also identified that the Somali immigrants in the Twin Cities exhibited housing careers similar to the majority of U.S. households---residential mobility and aim towards homeownership.

This study suggests adoption of a holistic approach to helping Somali immigrants to have access to adequate, quality and affordable housing by empowering them with education, job skills, citizenship and stable immigrant status. This study suggests further detailed research on issues such as mobility behavior, alternative financing and the role of social capital in housing.
