There is an increasing need for fast, accurate, reproducible and economical sensors for the detection and quantification of biological analytes. Conjugated polymers have been a major contributor due to their robustness and built-in transduction mechanism. In this research, functional conjugated polymer assemblies are presented as a novel approach for sensing small molecular analytes. These assemblies demonstrate a unique analyte specific optical response attributed to the twisting of polymer backbone, inter-chain interactions between the polymer main chains and scattering of visible light by polymer-analyte aggregates formed. An array of wavelengths (absorbance values across the entire spectrum) along with pattern recognition is utilized to identify and differentiate several structurally similar alkyldiamines and biogenic amines. An alternative approach to generate a polymer-based sensor array by utilizing the solvatochromic properties of a cross-reactive conjugated polymer will also be discussed. This array was used to improve classification accuracy for the biogenic amines. Finally, the development of a food freshness sensor and the evolution of a device for detecting food spoilage will be presented.
