Most researchers adopt a macro-linguistic point of view in studying the Cantonese sound shift through comparing the sound system demonstrated in Guangyun of the Song Dynasty and today's Cantonese sound system so as to analyze the change of initials, rimes and tones in Cantonese during the last 1200 years. This thesis, however, analyses the Cantonese sound shift from a micro-linguistic point of view, investigating the change over the last 120 years starting from 1828 to 1947. This study begins from Robert Morrison's The Vocabulary of Canton Dialect (1828) and ends with Chao Yuen Ren's Cantonese Primer (1947). The former was published with the aim of assisting foreign missionaries of Christianity to master Cantonese for their future missionary work in China, and the latter was intended to teach foreigners to learn Cantonese. The reason for selecting Cantonese Primer as a terminal point of this study is that the sound system recorded in the publication was essentially the same as the one shown in today's Cantonese.

520 $a In this thesis, the initials, rimes and tones of the transcribed example characters listed in most of the researched literature are arranged and organized respectively, and a description of the sound shift during the last 120 years is given based on the sound phenomena reflected by these Cantonese linguistic materials. The Cantonese sound phenomena over the last 120 years can be divided into three phases. Phase I spanned from 1828 to 1859. The most salient feature of this phase is that the numbers of initials and rimes were far larger than those in today's Cantonese sound system, for instance, there were two sets of dental initials as shown by the symbols "ch, ch', sh" and "ts, ts', s" employed in that period. With regard to the Cantonese rimes in Phase I, there saw quite a number of raised vowels; in addition there were "om", "op" and a fricative "z", and the characters having zhi she as the rime "i" and yu she as the rimes "u" and "y" were not yet diphthongized. Only eight tones were listed in most of the researched literature, including upper level tone, upper rising tone, upper departing tone, upper entering tone, lower level tone, lower rising tone, lower departing tone and lower entering tone. No "middle entering tone" was mentioned. Phase II spanned from 1888 to 1931. The most important development in this phase was the awareness of various aspects of the tones in Cantonese, including the recognition and treatment of the middle entering tone, the differentiation and analysis of the upper level tone concerning whether its tone contour should be 55 or 53, and the tone sandhi rules in Cantonese. In addition, the initials continued their sound shift from Phase I, and the two sets of dental initials still prevailed. Generally speaking, upon the raising of vowels the process of diphthongization of the vowels "i", "u" and "y" commenced in this phase, with the rime "z" still attached to one of the two sets of dental initials. The rimes "om" and "op" remained as mentioned in some researched literature of that period. Phase III spanned from 1947 to 1957. The nine Cantonese tones were already established. The two sets of dental initials began to merge, and the rime "z" disappeared due to the amalgamation (of the dental initials). Furthermore, the dipthongisation of vowels was completed. Basically, today's Cantonese sound system was formed since then.
