This study examined the relationship between two different models of personality characteristics (ego functions and five-factor personality traits) with two aspects of substance use: drug of choice and degree of substance involvement. This study was conducted with a convenience sample ( N = 121) of self-identified gay and bisexual men who used club drugs (cocaine, methamphetamine [crystal], MDMA [ecstasy], ketamine, and GHB) in New York City. An understanding of the factors that can contribute to the use of club drugs by some gay and bisexual men is important because use of club drugs has been associated with increases in unsafe sexual practices.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Correlational analyses corroborated prior research that substance users have lower ego function levels than a non-clinical sample. This sample also evidenced levels of the five-factor personality traits that were significantly different from the normative sample (statistically greater levels of neuroticism and openness to experience and statistically lower levels of agreeableness and conscientiousness). Furthermore, 20 of the 30 personality facets were significantly different statistically, including two of the lower order extraversion facets, even though the higher order extraversion factor was not significantly different statistically. This demonstrated the importance of surveying individuals on both higher order five-factor personality traits and lower order personality facets.
520 $a Multivariate logistic regression analyses also determined that knowing substance users' personality characteristics increased the ability to predict club drug of choice (actual use, preferred use, or hypothetical preference) and degree of substance involvement. The more specific personality facets and ego functions were more useful than the broader five-factor personality traits or ego factors in predicting the criterion variables.
520 $a In addition, this was the first study to examine ego functions and the five-factor personality traits together. A high level of multicollinearity between the two personality models confounded many of the combined multivariate analyses. This implies that there is a significant relationship between the ego functions and the five-factor personality traits.
520 $a Overall, the findings suggest that personality characteristics are an important source of information in understanding substance use. This information can be used to make appropriate modifications in prevention and treatment programs for substance use disorders.
