Emile Durkheim and Henrik Ibsen were both products of the intellectual milieu that saw the birth of sociology and the advent of an intellectual interest in the individual. Suicide, that most taboo of topics, was examined in the work of both thinkers, and, in Ibsen, was frequently symbolic of a character's fierce individualism or lack of community membership. Durkheim proposes that suicide is the result of an imbalance between an individual and society. Ibsen's prose plays all contained suicides of some type (symbolic or literal), and it is the proposal of this study to determine if Durkheim's theories on suicide can be successfully applied to Ibsen's corpus. If so, it can be determined that both Ibsen and Durkheim shared theories about individual self-ownership and social duty, and about the crisis that occurs when these become imbalanced. This, in turn, would indicate the nature of thought in the Europe of their time since both men were such spokespersons for their respective fields and cultures. This study has found that such a connection can be drawn, and the New Historicist examination of the two thinkers work reveals that the tides of European thought had become concerned with individual freedoms and individual welfare.Subjects--Topical Terms:
