Human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) has impacted approximately 1,086,334 individuals in the United States with 984,155 AIDS-only diagnoses through 2005. Adherence to antiretroviral (ART) medication regimes poses serious issues for impeding viral replication, viral mutation, effective immune system functioning, and treatment failure which negatively impact the survival of HIV-infected individuals. Factors that may impede adherence include medication side effects, number of pills, dosing schedules, and substance abuse such as alcohol or intravenious drug use. This study utilized a mailed AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) adherence questionnaire to ascertain non-adherence factors among a Northeastern Pennsylvania in-treatment population. This self-report questionnaire included factors relating to missed dosing, substance use and frequency, and health symptoms or side effects. Information was also drawn from an electronic data base for the purpose of population sociodemographic overview. The total number of targeted participants was a convenience sample of all adults ages 21-70 receiving case management services at the site.
