Mental retardation (MR) affects 1-3% of the population in the United States. There are many possible etiologies of MR, including both genetic and non genetic causes. As genetic medicine continues to advance there are expanding opportunities for genetic testing of adults/siblings of adults with MR. It is important, therefore, to understand the informational needs and preferences of siblings of adults with MR. This paper reviews survey results indicating informational needs and preferences as well as cultural and religious attitudes towards genetic testing. Recommendations for increasing communication and uptake of genetic testing in the population of adults/siblings of adults with MR are explored.Subjects--Topical Terms:
