520 $a In this research ten self-described, self-selected lesbians were interviewed using in-depth interviews. Through the use of open ended coding, four categories were established. The first category was consensual gender codes (ranging from hard butch to femme). Using the new consensual gender code definitions each of the following three categories were described: gender identities, gender roles, and influence on clothing cues. Based on consensual definitions of butch, femme and androgynous, it was determined that the ten respondents were using their gender identity to advertise role preferences within their relationships. These roles seemed to fall into heterosexual, patriarchal parameters of gender roles. It was also discovered that gender identity did change over time.
