520 $a These findings suggest that low-fidelity computer simulations can be effectively used as a tool for practicing diagnosis of electronic automotive systems, providing the diagnosis procedure involves low-level manual manipulation of physical components.
520 $a Purpose. The primary purpose of the study was to compare the performance of auto mechanics students who practice an electronic diagnostic procedure on a low-fidelity computer simulation with those who practice the procedure on an actual vehicle with actual equipment.
520 $a After practice, the students were asked to perform on their own the procedure as written on the activity sheet. The students' performance was assessed on a summative and a formative criterion-referenced basis. The chi-square test of association was used to test for significant differences between summative scores. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to determine significant differences between formative scores.
520 $a Findings. Major findings of the study revealed to significant differences between diagnostic procedure criterion-referenced summative scores made by the actual vehicle practice group and criterion-referenced summative scores made by the computer simulation practice group. There were also no significant differences detected between formative scores for the two groups. There was significant difference between the groups' scores in the area of equipment manipulation.
