Thesis (Ph.D.)--Kansas State University, 2002.
The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the family's vacation destination selection process that involves spousal conflict and resolution strategies. Specific objectives were to investigate the impact of family life cycle (FLC), vacation experience, and sociodemographics of female household head, and to delineate the relationships among conflict arousal, resolution techniques, and couples' satisfaction of the destination selected and the decision-making process. A staff and faculty directory published by a midwestern university served as the sampling frame of this study. Two pre-screening questions were asked in pre-contact by phone to determine potential respondents' qualification for the study and to solicit their participation: (1) whether they were married and (2) whether they, as a couple, had taken any vacation over the previous 12 months?

In home survey was employed to collect data for the study. A total of 149 couples participated in the study. A total of nine questions on FLC and vacation behaviors were answered by the couples together. Items on spousal conflict arousal, conflict resolution modes, and satisfaction were obtained from the spouses individually.

The overall level of conflict between husbands and wives across households was moderate. FLC was identified as significant determinants of the use of conflict resolution strategies employed, and vacation experience was found to be associated with conflict arousal dimensions. Among the three sociodemographic characteristics of female household head, only income was found to be significant in describing the differences in conflict arousal dimensions and the usage of conflict resolution modes in the family decision-making process of determining family vacation destination.

The study also endeavored to delineate relationships among conflict arousal, conflict resolution modes, and couple's satisfaction with the vacation destination selected and the decision-making process. Findings showed that the construct of resolution strategy plays the role of a mediator between spousal conflict and satisfaction. This implies that couples' satisfaction was impacted directly by conflict resolution strategies used, which were determined by spousal conflict arousal. Therefore, the different dimensions of conflict arousal elicit a variety of conflict resolution modes, which subsequently influence respondents' satisfaction.
