Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Fullerton, 2002.
The purpose of this study was to examine perceptions of effective and ineffective communication in the U.S. and Japan. The study employed thematic analysis. Seven themes were isolated for perceptions of effective communication in the U.S.: (1) understanding, (2) compatibility, (3) positive dispositions, (4) amount of communication, (5) positive outcomes, (6) positive nonverbal communication, and (7) adapting messages. Nine themes were isolated in Japan: (1) compatibility, (2) appropriateness, (3) relations between communicators, (4) positive outcomes, (5) amount of communication, (6) positive dispositions, (7) understanding, (8) positive nonverbal communication, and (9) clarity. Compatible themes were isolated for perceptions of ineffective communication in the two cultures. “Understanding” was assumed to be the key for effective communication and this theme appeared most frequently in the U.S. In Japan, “compatibility” appeared most frequently and “relations between communicators” appeared third most frequently. The recurrent appearance of these themes indicated Japanese perceptions of effective communication tend to be relationship-focused.
