In recent years, the polymer industry has endeavored to incorporate environmentally friendly polymers into disposable consumer applications. The development of biodegradable polymers such as poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-valerate) (PHBV) has led to the production of next generation environmentally compatible products. A limiting factor to the growth of these products is the high costs associated with biodegradable polymers. This study investigates the feasibility of using various calcium carbonates (CaCO$\sb3$'s) as fillers in PHBV.

520 $a In general, mechanical properties and processing characteristics were evaluated for PHBV blends containing 4, 10, and 25% by weight CaCO$\sb3$. Four CaCO$\sb3$ grades were identified that produced favorable economic enhancement over neat PHBV. Optimum performance at 4% loading was achieved using Hi-Pflex$\sp\circler$ 100 CaCO$\sb3$. Blends containing 10% Super-Pflex$\sp\circler$ 200 resulted in a 5% price reduction while maintaining a performance level comparable to neat PHBV. Superior economic enhancement was realized with 25% Albacar$\sp\circler$ 5970 blends. This configuration produced a 13% price reduction with less than 9% reduction in overall performance.
