The problem that this dissertation addressed is the widespread prevalence of diabetes in the United States, given how it has reached epidemic proportions, as well as the risk for serious diabetes-related health conditions and complications. This study was designed to investigate a new internet-based venue (www.stayhealthywithdiabetes.org) as an innovation for disseminating information about diabetes healthcare, specifically explaining what diabetes is, how it is diagnosed and treated, and how to manage it to avoid diabetes-related health conditions and complications (i.e., stay healthy).

An internet convenience sample of 100 responded to the survey scales: Rating and Evaluating Healthcare Website Survey; Computer/Internet Experience Skills Questionnaire; Self-Efficacy Accessing Internet Website; Risk Perception Survey for Diabetes Mellitus; and Survey Assessing Preferred Ways of Learning about Health Information. Findings suggested that subjects responded to the social marketing campaign, resulting in a sample of mostly Caucasians (n = 61) and African Americans (n = 27), including males (n = 57) and females (n = 43). They possessed very high self-efficacy for using computers and the internet to access healthcare information, and most had over a decade of experience using computers and the internet. They rated the website most highly for being easy to read and having direct links to information, scored high for risk knowledge, moderate for perceived personal control and worry, low for optimistic bias and personal disease risk, and lowest for environmental risk.

Participants preferred learning about diabetes from physicians first, followed by the internet. Older subjects rated the overall website the lowest, and those with lower health status rated the website lower. Those who reported better physician care rated the website higher. The higher their worry score, the higher they rated the new website. The best predictors of a high rating of the website were better overall health status, worry, and experience using computers and internet to access healthcare information, accounting for 30% of the variance. Findings suggested the potential to combine the preferred venue of the doctor's office with internet-based learning; physicians may consider equipping their offices with public-access laptops that permit access to innovative websites, such as www.stayhealthywithdiabetes.org.
