Thesis (M.A.)--University of Nebraska at Omaha, 2009.
The purpose of this study is to explore the similarities and differences between Colombian and Chinese students in their cultural adaptation, relationships, and life experiences in the U.S. through qualitative method. The author conducted twelve in-depth interviews with Chinese and Colombian students in the universities in Omaha, Nebraska, collected valuable data in their own original words. The findings validate many theories and findings from previous researches, and the conclusion shows that aside from a few differences, Chinese and Colombian students in the U.S. experienced cultural adaptation similarly in most areas. While cultural background, personality, and abilities are partially influential, the key factors what determines the approach and outcomes of a student's cultural adaptation and life experiences in the U.S. are individual perceptions and attitudes.
