Although some scholarly research has recognized the critical clinical link between domestic violence and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), other research suggests that many practitioners have not fully comprehended their clinical impact on their clients by missing this link. The issue under investigation is whether licensed mental health professionals are properly assessing, diagnosing and/or treating their clients for possible trauma caused by domestic violence victimization. Participants in this study included 241 licensed mental health professionals who resided in Lee County, Florida. This study is a descriptive quantitative research study that uses a non-experimental survey design. Results showed that significantly less than 50% of all licensed mental health professionals in Lee County, Florida, who participated in the study, were consistently or properly assessing their clients for domestic violence. Further, only 28.3% of the 62 licensed mental health professionals who participated in the study were consistently assessing their clients for domestic violence, while only 4.8% were properly assessing their clients for PTSD in connection with the domestic violence their clients experienced. A long term research study could prove to be beneficial in further understanding how professionals are assessing, diagnosing and treating victims of domestic violence, particularly in relationship to PTSD, by continuing to explore their working clinical knowledge of the processes involved in working with this client population.
