Food insecurity exists throughout the world, including in the United States. Millions of individuals lack sufficient food and/or sufficiently nutritious food. Although many organizations and individuals are involved in hunger relief efforts to address this problem, the communication about and among these participants is neither well-researched nor well-understood. Using qualitative methods, this study explored communication of food donors and their experiences with food donation and hunger relief.

Qualitative research methods, including semi-structured interviews, were used to investigate both the possible manifestation of cultural elements in food donor communication and possible emergence of expressions of health or nutrition. Four cultural elements emerged from the data, including: values, religion, family, and United States popular culture, suggesting that the food donors are influenced by these cultural factors.

Two themes regarding health and/or nutrition also emerged from the data analysis. First, the food donors believe that they eat healthy food and donate healthy food. Second, the food donors believe that it is difficult to eat healthy food in the United States. The food donors also expressed tension surrounding these ideas, admitting that they do not always eat healthy food and donate healthy food and that although eating healthy food in the United States was difficult, they managed to eat healthily. In addition, the food donors also admitted that while it was important to donate healthy food, donating some food, even if the food was not healthy, was better than not donating any food.

These themes suggest that food donors, within the context of food donation and hunger relief, are confused about nutrition and healthy food, both in their own diets and in the choices they make for food donation. This research helps improve understanding of food donor communication and behavior and serves not only to fill a gap in the communication literature, but also as a beginning for understanding and improving the health and nutrition of both food donors and those reliant upon food donations.
