The ability to provide supplementary services with manufactured products can be a critical source of a manufacturing firm's competitive advantage. Yet, little attention has been paid to the role of supplementary services in manufacturing firms. This research defines and analyzes one particular manifestation of supplementary services. Embedded services are defined as those that are integrated into the physical structure of the product. An embedded service is an innovation which transforms the service package design and the product design. In effect, the product automatically performs the service for the customer. By embedding services, a manufacturer bypasses existing business system players that have traditionally provided the service. Thus, the service package and the product are both changed.

520 $a Five cases of embedded services are studied in order to evaluate the circumstances under which manufacturers embed services. The findings indicate that embedded services are most likely to be developed by firms that are highly innovative relative to competitors. In general, embedded services appear to be relatively moderate innovations, except when they are introduced by a firm trying to enter the product industry. In that case, the embedded service innovations tend to be radical. In addition, embedded services most often occur in products in mature markets. The research findings are summarized in a framework that can serve as a basis for future work in this area.
