A Volumetric Particle Tracking Velocimetry (VPTV) system has been developed in this project based on the earlier Volumetric Particle Streak Tracking Velocimetry (VPSTV) system. The VPSTV system employs two cameras and measures only the spatial distribution of the fluid motion. The VPTV system employs three synchronized cameras as the data acquisition system and tracks both the spatial and temporal distribution of the fluid motion. The data processing routine is composed of available techniques including the camera calibration, particle identification and newly developed temporal-tracking algorithm and spatial-matching algorithm. The system is capable of measuring the transient fluid motion in a volumetric space with the sampling rate of 30Hz and spatial resolution in millimeters.

520 $a A 2D temporal-tracking and a spatial-matching algorithm were developed in this study to compose the data processing routine which reconstructs the particle trajectories from particle-images captured by three cameras. The temporal-tracking algorithm tracks the particle-image trajectories in each camera's view first and then the spatial-matching algorithm reconstructs the particle trajectories from the tracked particle-image trajectories. Standard synthetic-images were employed to validate the temporal-tracking and spatial-matching algorithms. The results show the algorithms performed effectively even under severe input noise, and exceeded the traditional algorithms by exploring more particle positions and longer particle trajectories.
520 $a A hydraulic system was setup to generate a laminar flow in a cylinder tube. The flow is measured by the VPTV system for the purpose of demonstration. Fluorescent particles were employed to trace the fluid motion. An argon-iron laser was employed as the illumination system. The tube is immersed in a water tank to compensate for the light refraction occurring at the tube boundary. A method was proposed to compensate for the light refraction at the tank boundary. Particle trajectories were reconstructed from the experiment. The velocity was calculated. The errors are quantitatively discussed.
