An experimental study to understand the wave-turbulence interaction in terms of changes in diffusion and surface wave characteristics is presented. A large scale wave tank equipped with a programmable wave maker was used to simulate a variety of wave conditions. Submerged turbulence was simulated using an oscillating grid and Rhodamine Dye was used for the diffusion studies. Experiments were conducted under different flow conditions and the measurements included time histories of dye concentration, turbulent velocities and surface waves. Results show that the interaction intensifies the mixing significantly and causes reduction in surface wave energy. The spectral density of the velocity fluctuations for the whole range of studied scales approximately followed Kolmogorov's universal law, partly falling in the 5/3 range and partly in the transition zone before the dissipative range. Theoretical formulations are presented for the estimation of turbulent diffusivities from simple measurements and also the effects of boundaries, decaying agent and mean-flow on these estimates are discussed. The Turbulence kinetic energy balance equation is solved using an algebraic model of the length scale to give the vertical distribution of energy and dissipation rates in a region bounded by surface waves and submerged turbulence. The predictions are found to be in agreement with the measurements. This study has applications in the problems of ocean circulation, pollutant transport, biological productivity and ship wakes.
