Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2007.
The majority of building structures in the United States (over 80%) are light-frame wood construction. The unsatisfactory performance of many woodframe buildings during the 1994 Northridge and 1995 Kobe earthquakes showed the inadequacies of current design and construction practice for woodframe structures. Therefore, the vulnerability of these buildings to damage and economic losses in a major earthquake has become a big concern.

The overall objective of this thesis research is to develop a reliability-based performance evaluation method of woodframe buildings under seismic loads and damage reduction measures through explicit treatment of the uncertainty in demand and capacity. To achieve this goal, the structural performance and potential damage of a class of representative woodframe buildings under seismic loads are evaluated. The four index woodframe buildings and two retrofitted buildings are selected for study. The uniform hazard ground motions (UHGM) corresponding to two different probability levels for Los Angeles, California and Memphis, Tennessee sites are selected for time-history dynamic analysis and IDA study. The effects of inter-component connections and live loads on the building performance are also investigated.

The building damage is measured by the Park-Ang damage index, which is a function of the maximum deformation and absorbed hysteretic energy under seismic loading. An IDA-based approach to calibrate the damage model parameters is developed and validated in this study. To evaluate the potential damage incurred to the woodframe buildings under earthquakes, the relationship between calculated damage index and observed building damage is established and validated by experimental test data.

The probabilistic performance curves are developed in terms of both maximum story drift ratio and building damage index for each of the six selected buildings, with uncertainties in both demand and capacity accounted for The adequacy of existing buildings and current design is examined in terms of building damage and the corresponding probability. The design recommendations are made to improve the performance and reduce the potential damage of woodframe buildings under seismic loads.
