This study builds on recent advances in the social-scientific analysis of the New Testament, cultural anthropology, and human geography (particularly the work of Robert Sack) to defend a new and more fluid classification of public and private space in the ancient world. While previous studies have typically employed a sharp public/private dichotomy, this study presents a public-private spectrum that was socially contested, negotiated, and overlapped in the ancient milieu of Luke's gospel. The public-private spectrum is demonstrated by a survey of ancient literary and archaeological material drawn from Greek, Roman, and Palestinian provenances. This survey is complemented by a more detailed analysis of Plutarch's Pracepta gerenticie rei publicae and Book IV of Philostratus's Vita Apollonii. These two works fit the social-spatial scale of Luke's gospel and sharpen the definition of the unofficial public sphere and local politics, which fall near the middle of the public-private spectrum. After this, the study exegetes each pericope in Luke 18:35--19:48 in order to present its social-spatial characteristics. In this section, Luke repeatedly presents Jesus as one who acts in the unofficial public sphere and deals with local politics. Furthermore, 1835--19:48 functions as a microcosm of the preceding material in the gospel and a preparation for the passion narrative. Therefore, a survey of several passages related to each of the sections in 18:35--19:48 reveals that Luke's gospel as a whole places Jesus in the unofficial public and local political spheres. Finally, the end of the study suggests how Luke and his community fit into the changing social-spatial landscape of the late first century and draws out some implications for contemporary Christian social-spatial practice.
