520 $a Injecting drug users (IDUs) belong to the most important HIV/AIDS risk group and are the target of the HIV voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) in Vietnam. Information on VCT uptake among IDUs is, however, limited. Sensitive and stigmatized information is routinely collected using the conventional face to face interview (FTF).
520 $a The objectives of this research were to describe characteristics of the IDU population; to measure the VCT uptake and identify factors associated with HIV testing; and to compare the responses obtained from Audio Computer Assisted Self Administered Interviews (ACASI) and FTF interviews.
520 $a This two-phase research study was conducted among males IDUs in Nam Dinh city, Vietnam in 2005-2007. The informative qualitative study was used to guide the quantitative study which consisted of a cross sectional survey, provision of VCT promoting information and free test coupons within three months. Pharmacies and health care clinics that sold needles and syringes (N&S) were identified as the study sampling frame. ACASI software was developed and used in 327 interviews. FTF was used in 124 interviews. Data were analyzed using logistic regression and presented in three papers.
520 $a VCT uptake following the study intervention was 14.7%. The HIV testing rates were 41.4% and 50.6% before and after the intervention. VCT users were older, ever married/living together, were influenced by family members, used alcohol in the last month, and had a history of injecting in jail. VCT barriers were perceived HIV testing costs (hopelessness, anxiety) and benefit (hope for future, disease prevention). Individual level intervention can be a relevant approach to increase VCT uptake among the IDU population.
