In this thesis, I explore how writers and filmmakers grapple with anthropocentrism and our ability or inability to transcend and transform it. More specifically, I adopt the lens of Human-Animal Studies to reexamine the Western literary tradition, using it to interrogate the anthropocentrism underpinning our most human quality: storytelling. For as long as we've had language, we've made animals narrative devices, representing them as everything from monster to metaphor, cartoon to companion; in our oldest myths, we find anthropomorphic wildlife, human-animal crossbreeds, and shape-shifting beasts. Because language influences our attitudes and actions, we must consider how other creatures are portrayed; as the only species that tells stories, we dominate the narrative, using animals not as fully-formed beings, but as animal-shaped ideas. To investigate this issue, I've selected texts across genre and media in which the lines between species are especially blurry: Edmund Spenser's epic poem The Faerie Queene, Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, H.P. Lovecraft's story "Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family," Adam Hines's graphic novel Duncan the Wonder Dog: Show One, and the films Grizzly Man, Arrival, and Annihilation. Ultimately, I argue that in humanity's greatest stories, we don't just interact with other beings-we are irreversibly changed by them. To varying degrees, these characters transform, become hybrids, and transcend our limitations, both biological and self-imposed. While "hybrid" often implies offspring, it's not crossbreeding between species that I advocate for, but a reconsideration of what it means to be human. If hybridity usually refers to the body, I argue that it's also a matter of the mind. Because "human" and "animal" are categories we've created, we have the power to challenge human exceptionalism and acknowledge that our perspective is not the only one. Hybridity might allow us, for a moment, to peek beyond the human.
