Driving safety has become a major public concern due to the rising number of traffic accidents. Factors such as driver fatigue, diminished perception, impaired recognition, and reduced vehicle control are often linked to these accidents. Additionally, distractions while driving can lead to severe injuries and fatalities. Addressing these issues and enhancing driver awareness are essential steps towards improving road safety and reducing accidents. This study aimed to investigate how visual distractions, such as billboards, digital advertisements on highways, and colorful decorations on shops and buildings, affect drivers' cognitive responses while driving using Electroencephalography (EEG). EEG was recorded from three subjects in a virtual environment at the Applied DSP research laboratory, Lamar University. After that, several signal processing algorithms were applied to the recorded EEG. A band pass filter was used to remove noise and artifacts. To enhance the recorded EEG data, DC removing and common average reference (CAR) spatial filter were applied. Initially we tried to do Event related Potential analysis (ERP), but we found that it is not suitable for long duration epoch, this analysis is more convenient when the epoch duration is small like 1 to 10 seconds. As our epoch duration is 110 seconds long, we decided to do Power Spectral Density (PSD) analysis. Finally, Spectrograms were estimated via Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT) and average power in specific EEG rhythms were evaluated from them. For instance, several spikes in Theta power at different electrode locations were observed in EEG of each subject. These spikes were aligned with the occurrences of specific visual distractions in the stimulation videos that the subjects were attending. Therefore, we conclude that visual distractions may have a pronounced effect on drivers' cognitive response and that such effect may be correlated with specific features in subject's EEG. We also hypothesize that the observed effects may vary depending on several factors, such as subject's gender, age, mental condition, driving experience, etc., so additional studies are needed to further verify and quantify such alterations in cerebral activity.
