Ti-6Al-4V is the most commonly used titanium alloy in aerospace, automotive, and biomedical industries because of its excellent strength, low modulus of elasticity, high corrosion resistance, good weldability and heat treatability. In this study, numerical investigation is conducted to assess the effect of pulse energy level and operating temperature on residual stress induced on Ti6Al-4V workpiece during nanosecond laser shock peening with varying laser pulse widths and boundary conditions. The commercial FEM software package ABAQUS is employed to conduct FEM simulation of single shot and multishot nanosecond and femtosecond laser peening of Ti-6Al-4V. Totally, eight nanosecond laser pulse energy levels are selected. The FEM model for laser peening can provide insightful guidance for selecting optimal peening parameters and operating temperatures. In addition, this research was expanded to include simulation of femtosecond laser shock peening analysis which aimed to study the effects of preheating and varied laser operating parameters on residual stress magnitude and depth on a 3D Ti-6Al-4V workpiece. Fortran subroutines VDLOAD and DFLUX were employed in conjunction with the research version of ABAQUS in order to simulate preheating and multishot FLSP material treatments. It was discovered that a positive correlation between FLSP energy level and residual stress magnitude exists, along with a positive correlation between FLSP pulse time, preheating temperature and residual stress penetration depth exist in FLSP material treatments.
