This dissertation explores the evidence of biblical canon lists in Syriac. Previous scholarship has stated that, while Syriac Christians were interested in the biblical canon, no definitive pronouncement or canonical decree was ever issued about the canon; as such, it has been claimed that there is no official biblical canon in the disparate Syriac ecclesiastical traditions. In the study of the biblical canon in Syriac, however, biblical canon lists have not received due attention. From the seventh century CE onward, Syriac Christians copied and created a variety of canon lists. Through a study of all extant and accessible canon lists in Syriac, as well as discourse related to the biblical canon by important Syriac figures such as Jacob of Edessa, John Bar Penkaye, Isho'dad of Merv, Barhebraeus, Michael Rabo, Barhebraeus, and 'Abdisho Bar Brika, the contours of biblical canon lists in Syriac are analyzed. This dissertation shows that the ubiquity of the Apostolic Canons along with the scholastic impulse to create stichometries and other catalogs of canonical books provides evidence of firm statements about the content of biblical canon lists in Syriac. Further, the Apostolic Canons were adopted into canon law collections, most notably in 'Abdisho Bar Brika's Collection of Ecclesiastical Judgments, which gave this canon list the force of law. The present study concludes that canon lists are integral to the canonical consciousness of Syriac Christians and that the seventh century was pivotal and formative for biblical canon lists in Syriac.
