The study provides a socio-historical survey of the significance of commensality for the construction of identity for the people of Israel through the first-century church. The thesis of this study is that, by exercising their freedom to share common meals with unbelievers, per 1 Cor 10:27, Corinthian believers would have participated in Jesus's tradition of symbolic inversion, subverting the social expectations connected to identity-constituting boundaries marked by first-century commensality. Understanding believers' participation in common meals with unbelievers as symbolic inversion has important social and theological implications. Just as symbols, dramatized in rituals, are understood to embody what is known about the world, the quality of the socio-emotional life it supports, and the way one should behave in it, Corinthian believers would have acted as social agents, embodying a new vision of life for themselves and their neighbors. It is precisely the symbolic turn that would have made the reconstruction of social identity and identity-constituting boundaries possible. As the expression of a Christological imagination, the symbolic turn would have imbued the ritual of commensality with new meaning, dramatizing the climax of the Christian story-the hope of divine self-giving love found in the promise of the cross and grounded in the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
