The present study argues that in Ephesians 4:30, the apostle Paul admonishes believers, as new creations in Christ, to avoid immoral words, actions, and attitudes that could disrupt the unity of the body, thereby provoking the Holy Spirit of God. Paul's use of Isaiah 63:10 as background for Ephesians 4:30 indicates that the verb λυπέω, usually translated "to grieve," is more accurately rendered "to provoke." The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit is both impassible and passionate. His emotions are produced from within, not from without, as he chooses from his own inward volition to be stirred by believers' behavior.
