Paul wrote the seven authentic letters (Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Philippians, 1 Thessalonians, and Philemon) during the first century of the Common Era (CE) with a cognizance of Jewish and Greco-Roman cultural traditions in which the practice of hospitality concerning the host-guest relationship was deeply engrained. Broadly, hosts who extended this hospitality assisted their guests, who were typically travelers or strangers, on their journeys by providing them with, for example, food, shelter, and supplies. These hospitality practices also contributed to initiating meaningful host-guest relationships that allowed guests to frequent the hospitality of their hosts (and vice versa). As a result, hosts and guests fostered genuine friendships and established a network of reliable accommodations and gathering spaces with one another. Further, hosts and guests often participated in hospitality that offered and encouraged dining and table fellowship. Paul, as a Messianic Jew (Christ-believer) and Roman citizen, distinctively utilized various facets of Jewish and Greco-Roman hospitality traditions to facilitate and support his itinerant lifestyle as "the apostle to the Gentiles." As a missionary of Christ, a father-figure to his communities, and a leader and advocate for Christ-believers, Paul practiced his own version of hospitality ("Pauline hospitality") that instituted and shaped the nascent Christ-believing identity. Throughout the authentic letters, there is ample evidence that Paul relied on first-century practices of hospitality, and his belief in Christ influenced these practices as he established, maintained, and guided these Christ-believing communities. This dissertation conducts a study of hospitality in the seven authentic letters of Paul by developing an ethical framework of six themes in and through the coined phrase, "Pauline hospitality." I investigate these occurrences of hospitality in the seven authentic letters of Paul and categorize them according to the six themes that uniquely define Paul's ethical notions of hospitality in Christ. I refer to this framework as the "six markers in the ethics of Pauline hospitality." Then, I further analyze two examples of Pauline hospitality concerning dining and table fellowship in the host-guest relationship in 1 Corinthians which include the three considerations regarding idol food/meat in (10:23-11:1) and the Lord's Supper (11:17-34).
