The preponderance of vocabulary related to honor and dishonor in 1 and 2 Samuel is evidence of the high importance Israel placed upon obtaining and maintaining social status. This dissertation investigated the unique vocabulary of honor and dishonor in 1 and 2 Samuel and how the books contend that status was to be properly gained or defended. The investigation revealed that honor in Israel was most greatly influenced by a relationship with YHWH. While some nobles, such as King Saul, sought to gain or defend honor through personal effort, King David and others correctly grasped honor to be a gift from YHWH, preserved by honoring Him.
