In recent years, there has been a significant increase in negativity towards sexual and gender minorities (SGMs) along with a movement to cement Christian values in government in the United States. This surge in right-wing extremism (RWE) may be driven by conservative religious groups perceiving their values as under threat as SGMs attain more rights. The present research examined how perceived threats to religious groups are linked to RWE, a latent variable comprised of prejudice toward SGMs, conspiracy beliefs about SGMs, and ideologies (i.e., Christian nationalism) that serve to cement the status of the religious ingroup. Three studies were conducted. Study 1 developed two scales to measure religious approach-avoidance and perceptions of religious identity as potential moderators of the effect of religious group threats. Study 2 experimentally manipulated symbolic and realistic religious group threats to test their effects on RWE. Symbolic threat indirectly predicted RWE via the perception that Christian values are under threat in the U.S., while realistic threat did not directly or indirectly predict RWE. Liberal participants were more influenced by the threat than conservative participants, but religious approach-avoidance and religious identity as a resource did not moderate the threat manipulations. Study 3 attempted to replicate and extend the results of Study 2 by manipulating a group and self-affirmation to alleviate the effects of the threat. Study 3 replicated the indirect effect of symbolic threat on RWE via the perception that Christian values are under threat but did not replicate the significant moderation by liberalism. Neither group nor self-affirmation significantly moderated the results. Several interpretations for the failure to obtain a direct effect of threat as well as the null results of the two buffer variables are offered. The findings from this research offer insights for understanding responses to perceived group threats and may aid in combatting rising extremism in the U.S.
